Kickstarter Spotlight: Slaughter the Horror Movie Making Game
We have a long celebrated history with our Australian friends at Storyweaver Games. I am very excited about their current project for Slaughter.
Slaughter is a horror movie making card game, but really it plays a lot more like an RPG. Take an awesome theme, grab your character tropes, and have a blast making your own movies. This game is a highly narrative experience and one that is sure to be a big win for horror fans and anyone who likes to role-play.
On The Table: Scythe by Stonemaier Games
I recently took the time to get Stonemaier Games’ 2016 juggernaut Scythe back to the table. It was my first time playing Scythe in over a year, and the first time playing it with the Invaders from Afar and The Wind Gambit (Airships Module) expansions.
Instantly I was reminded why this game is still in the top 10. While it is a bit of a pain to set up and tear down it remains one of the most rewarding tabletop experiences someone can have. At first glance, all of the bits and pieces for each faction seem like a lot and it is easy for the uninitiated to feel lost. However, at its core, Scythe, is a simple limited action engine building area control game. You are rarely doing more than two separate actions in your turn and the synergy you can build between your faction and player boards can really provide a lot of amazing moments in later turns.
“Build. Work. Fight. Survive.” – Reegan Perez, 10-year-old on Scythe
Because player turns can happen so quick Scythe is great even with larger player counts, although I have yet to play the game with more than 5 players. Combat is simple yet gets the job done. Offers plenty of opportunities for surprises, but the lack of dice roles makes it easier to know ahead of time (assuming you have the combat cards to assist) on who can win an engagement.
Overall I was glad to spend the time with my wife and son playing Scythe today. It was a great time and therefore will still be highly recommended.
